It intentionally forms a network of cracks as it dries. Use it to create a weathered, cracked surface reminiscent of old frescoes or ancient surfaces. Once dry, it leaves an opaque, matte, absorbent surface that can be painted over and tinted with acrylic paints.

Product details

Brand: GOLDEN

Product line: Crackle Paste

Medium type: opaque crackle acrylic paste

Manufacturer: Golden Artist Colors, New York

Country of origin: USA

Use and application

Apply the paste to a firm, inflexible surface prepared with one or two coats of gesso to ensure adhesion. The size and depth of the cracks depend on the thickness of the application. A thicker layer creates more pronounced, deeper cracks. You can tint the paste with acrylic paint before applying it (up to approximately 10% of the paste’s volume). Let it air-dry without speeding up the process artificially and without adding a retarder or other additives.

Frequently asked questions

Can the paste be tinted before application? Yes, you can mix the paste with acrylic paint before applying it, up to approximately 10% of its volume.

Can the drying process be sped up? No, let the paste air-dry.
