Sketchbook or loose paper?

A sketchbook keeps your drawings together and you can take it with you. The Art Creation sketchbook has a sturdy binding and an elastic closure, and the manufacturer lists it for pencils, charcoal, chalk, ink and watercolors. You’ll find toned paper in the Strathmore Gray artbook (128 sheets, 118 g/m²). For watercolor, choose a heavier paper: Canson Montval is 300 g/m², has a fine-grain surface and sheets glued on the edges, so the paper barely buckles while you paint.

For loose sheets, go for school drawing paper: it is 190 g/m², has a smooth surface and comes in packs of 20 sheets in A4, A3 and A2. If you draw with pastels, pencils or red chalk, choose the Hahnemühle Ingres Pastel pad in 9 shades. More papers are available from CANSON, Clairefontaine, ARCHES and Daler-Rowney.

Notebooks, school and carrying drawings

For notes and journaling, there is the Spoko A5 notebook with 96 lined pages, an elastic band and a ribbon bookmark. For school, there is the colored Canson Kids sketchbook, which according to the manufacturer barely warps with water-based paints.

Finished drawings are protected by the Clairefontaine nylon bag with stiffer sides and handles, the Canson 61 × 81 cm portfolio, or the Daler-Rowney Simply plastic portfolio bag, which according to the manufacturer also protects the contents from moisture.

You can choose what to draw with in the Pencils and Printmaking and Pastels and Markers categories. You’ll find clipboards among the drawing boards, and rulers and compasses in Technical Drawing.
