Graphite pencils and charcoal
In the Pencils and Charcoals category, you choose pencils by grade: H draws light and thin, B soft and dark, and HB sits in the middle. The Daler Rowney set covers grades from 6H to 9B and includes a sharpener and a plastic case. The Nassau 15-piece set adds an eraser, a metal sharpener and an A5 sketch pad to 12 pencils from 5H to 5B. Choose charcoal by form – a thick stick for large areas, or charcoal pencils in sets with other tools.
Colored pencils for drawing
Choose colored pencils by who will be drawing and with which technique. For children, chunky or triangular pencils work well, such as the JOVI triangular woodless pencils, which the manufacturer recommends from age 3, or GIOTTO Be-Be with a 7 mm lead. For everyday drawing, there are GIOTTO Stilnovo pencils with a 3.3 mm lead.
Technical drawing
In Technical Drawing you’ll find rulers and set squares, compasses, mechanical pencils and paper. For school geometry, a ruler set and a metal compass are all you need; for design work, add tracing paper and a mechanical pencil with a 0.3, 0.5 or 0.7 mm lead. Among other things, the UNI PIN Starter Case contains three calibrated fineliners with line widths of 0.5, 0.9 and 1.2 mm and a mechanical pencil with a 0.5 mm HB lead. You’ll find pens in Technical Pens and Pencils, templates in Technical Rulers and Templates and clipboards in Drawing Boards.
Drawing supplies
In Drawing Supplies you’ll find, for example, Sakura Pigma Micron technical pens with line widths from 0.2 to 0.8 mm, the Sakura Pigma Brush pen, which writes like a pen and draws like a brush, and the UNI POSCA PC-1M paint marker with a 0.7–1 mm line, which according to the manufacturer draws on paper, wood, stone, fabric and glass.
You’ll find pastels, markers and inks in Pastels and Markers, and more supplies in Drawing Art Supplies.
Frequently asked questions
Which drawing pencils should I start with?
If you don’t know which grades you’ll use, pick a set with several grades, for example the Nassau Fine Art 8-piece set with six pencils from 4H to 4B, a sharpener and a tin case.
What is the difference between H and B pencils?
Hard H pencils draw light, thin and precise lines for details. Soft B pencils draw dark and suit bold lines and broad shading. HB sits in the middle.
Can colored drawing pencils be blended with water?
Yes, if they are watercolor pencils. Bruynzeel watercolor pencils can be used dry or with water and a brush; heavy watercolor paper is recommended for wet techniques.
