Customer reviews
Daniel Smith will always be my number one choice for watercolor. The pigments in these watercolors are unique. The wide range of more than 260 colors means I’m always discovering new shades. The beauty of the Daniel Smith color range is that it includes colors you simply can’t find from another brand, beautiful shades like Moonglow, Lunar Blue, and Sleeping Beauty. They’re so intensely pigmented that you only need a very small amount of paint, which explains the price. If you’re looking for the highest-quality professional watercolors, choose Daniel Smith!
PB16 is a beautiful green-blue shade and an underrated pigment in the phthalo family. You can mix it from PB15:3 and PG7, but I’ve grown to love this turquoise as a single-pigment base. It’s incredibly versatile. Mixed with yellows, it makes bright, clean greens; with reds, it makes moody purples. And since it’s a phthalo pigment, it’s reliable and economical. A small amount of paint goes a long way. Daniel Smith’s version of this color is my favorite of all the brands I’ve tried. It has a softer, calmer character once it dries on the paper.
I have several tubes of Daniel Smith watercolors and absolutely love them, especially the quinacridone shades, which are wonderfully rich. Quinacridone Fuchsia is a single-pigment cool red, a little bluer than quinacridone rose, but not as blue as quinacridone magenta. At full strength, it’s a strong, deep pink-red. Thin washes flow beautifully, making it an ideal color for painting flowers. It’s great to find such an exceptional range.
Almost the perfect “primary” yellow. It makes beautiful, fresh greens, which is great for me because light, transparent tones are otherwise hard to achieve. I have a warmer yellow in my palette for mixing, so this works really well alongside it. It makes smooth, clean glazes.
I bought this to mix gouache with watercolor and create a hybrid. Wow, it’s so good! I had another brand, but this DS is excellent quality, as always. I use it straight from the tube, but plan to put some in a half pan too. Daniel Smith is simply a genius.
